Kingsessing Recreation Center, one of Philadelphia’s oldest and largest rec centers, is undergoing a full renovation through the city’s Rebuild initiative. Originally opened in 1916 and designed by city architect Philip H. Johnson, the 32,000 SF Beaux-Arts building is being completely modernized by Clemens Construction. Interior upgrades include all-new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems, as well as accessibility improvements such as new stairs, ramps, lifts, and a three-stop elevator. The lower-level features a large dojo, exercise rooms, locker rooms, restrooms, utility rooms and storage. The ground floor program includes the main lobby and lounge, offices, a conference room, arts and crafts room, restrooms, a basketball gymnasium, and a boxing gymnasium. The upper floor houses a large auditorium, stage, kitchen, multipurpose room, game room, computer lab, and offices.

Exterior work across the 9.2-acre site will create welcoming, active outdoor spaces for the community. Improvements include a multi-sport turf field, all new playground equipment, safety surfaces, pedestrian pathways, upgraded site lighting, seating areas, and thoughtful landscaping. While currently not part of the renovation scope, the adjacent pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, and library remain available and an integral part of the recreation center. Together, the interior and exterior upgrades aim to preserve the historic character of Kingsessing Rec Center while transforming it into a fully accessible, inclusive, and modern hub for community activity.
